I read and studied this cover to cover, have worked with the OS in several production environments, and installed managed and configured every release of Windows Server there has ever been. This is such a minimal amount of what is needed to pass the exam I'm not even sure how it has the Microsoft Press moniker on it. There are many typos and other issues, and I will probably avoid this author and this publication series whenever possible. There is no way this would provide enough information to pass the exam.Heck, sometimes it doesn't even provide enough information to pass the practice tests at the end of an objective! It is a good beginner's guide/overview.
This book was recommended by an official Microsoft training instructor upon completion of my 410 course as a "good suppliment for what you've just learned. One of my students used the book and in 2 weeks was able to pass the 70-410 first try". So I read through this book in about a month (I work as a full time sysadmin), took notes. I even made flashcards with the end of chapter questions. During that month I also used the virtual labs from the course as a refresher. So I decided to schedule my exam as a Pearson package with free retake and practice exam. But upon starting practicing with the simualted exam from MeasureUp was when I started questioning what I read in the book. I went through the practice test for about 2 weeks until I got a decent passing score twice in one day in official mode. Scheduled the exam on a Saturday, sat down and had no clue about 50% of the questions on there. The questions were very skewed, oddly specific and seemed to emphasize server core mostly over any other topic. I felt cheated. This book did not help me at all. I'm going to look elsewhere i.e. trancender for more practice tests. My advise is buy a package with a re-take because there is no way you can pass the first time. Microsoft has designed it to be this way. My experience: B.S. Information Technology w/ 5 years self-taught virtual environment with server/client VMs, 3 years professional VMware/ physical server and client Windows/ Linux domain configuration. If anyone has recommendations for other materials, I am open to suggestion. I WILL NOT use test dumps.
While the book introduces you to some key topics, it fails to give nearly any depth, and misses many other key areas for the exam. I've taken numerous practice tests and have consistently failed. I've done some research for exam objectives on TechNet, and there are so many topics this book doesn't even touch. Ridiculous. This should not be an Exam Ref book. This should be an introduction to Installing and Configuring 2012 R2.
So much missed information. So many mistakes. This book is crap, and i feel sad for people who are brand new to the MCSE.Here are a few gems i'd like to highlight.Page 48"Be aware that converting the disk partition style is a destructive process. You can perform the conversion only on an unllocated disk." He forgot the caveat that you can convert MBR disks to GPT just fine, its the other way around that is the problem.A wonderful answer to a quiz question on page 68A. Correct: When extending a simple volume, you can use only the available space on the same disk. If you expand the volume to another disk it is no longer simple.D. Correct you can extend a simple volume across additional disks if it is not a system volume or boot volume.Confusing much?
To start: Microsoft Press did not even proof read this book before publication as there are more grammatical errors than I could note. The issue is grammatical errors and misspellings in technical materials such as this cause uncertainty in the content. That being the case, you could easily and more cheaply defer to another free source. The book in whole added 'nothing' to what is available online at the Microsoft website or via a search engine. Your money would more wisely be spent on the practice exams offered via the test provider or another third party. This book will not help you pass, but waste your time checking incomplete or inaccurate content.
I really like that this book is written by / for Microsoft and covers the sections for the the 70-410 exam section of MCSA. Covers the topic extremely well and has questions at the end of each subject area to refresh your learning. Great companion guide to go along with the training guide.
Lowest price on this book anywhere. Barnes & Nobles wants another $20-30 and the stores won't even price match their own website. Book is laid out well; used same book for another exam. However, you likely won't pass your exam just by reading this book only. You need practice exams, additional readings, or exam dumps to prep for the real test.
About halfway through the book, the editor must have decided he didn't need to bother finishing. The formatting is broken, there is content blatantly used as filler from older books that was supposed to be edited, the graphics were non-uniform, and there are excessive mistakes. When trying to submit errata, I was just blown off, but there is an entire "important" box referring to a diagram out of one of the WS2008 exam preps and has nothing to do with WS2012R2.And as others have mentioned, this is not enough on its own to go from no experience to passing the exam. It may work for you if you have done enough hands on with WS2012R2 though.
