With a reference for wood, woodworking and American truth and lore. I love reading of our American past. How we did things and techniques long gone. I read Eric Sloane books with fondness and a bit of sadness. With the passing of time means more and more ways and stories of the past are lost. What will the young do?
The level of expertise of those who came before us is often not recognized and their skills and insights are lost. Eric Sloan presents information about wood that few know. Its a remarkable book with incredible illustrations.
You will learn about and appreciate wood more than ever before. I last bought this book 45 years ago....
If you love wood, in all forms, from the tree to wood based products (barns, tools, etc) this is a wonderful book with lots of rich history and details that we seem to lose over time. the illustrations are excellent. We purchased this for my dad the woodworker, but I loved reading it before and after we gave it to him.
I bought this book thinking that it would make a nice reference book with hand drawn illustrations. Boy was I surprised when I started reading it. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. I read the whole book in one night and then immediately started recommending it to friends and family. Everyone I loaned it out to loved it. I love how the anecdotes really give you a feeling on who the author really is.Reading this book will make you feel like you just spent a few days talking with your grandfather about "the good old days."
Sloane is a writer that brings human qualities to history. Wood is a absolute necessity for building the society of the past and for the future. All tree huggers and anti-tree harvest humans should read this wonderful prose and feel why timber is really important to the world. But it must me managed to not destroy the benefits.
